PART I

COURSE DESCRIPTION GUIDELINES

Study of research, theory, terms and practices associated with Human Resource Management. Topics include current trends and practices in Organizational Psychology & Human Relations Management.

ENTRY SKILLS: None required

COGNITIVE & SKILLS OBJECTIVES: This course is competency based. Competency is demonstrated by mastery of the cognitive content and the technical skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

   
Develop a working knowledge of HRM (Human Resource Management) terms and concepts

 
Examine the impact and effects of ethics/social responsibility, diversity, globalism and technology on the HR function.

   
Develop an understanding of job analysis, human resource planning, recruitment and selection    
Illustrate the impact of training and development on employees at all levels of the organization.
   
Explain the performance appraisal and its role in performance management    
Develop an appreciation of how compensation and benefits programs are formulated and administered    
Examine how safety and health factors can affect a firm's profitability    
Compare employee and labor relations from both unionized and union-free standpoints.    

COURSE ORGANIZATION

The course follows the web hosted basic calendar schedule consisting of media, introductions, interviews with industry experts, multiple reference links, research and forum assignments. The course offers and extra credit class collaborative project based on the concepts and lessons discussed during the course.

The optional class project is to develop a matrix of laws, regulations and taxes related to employment.

PART II

COURSE OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES

1.MGMT 49B is a hands-on approach to developing current practical business and Human Resource skills.  The aim of the course is to improve skills and encourage individuals to become more aware of how to develop an emerging business or to become a more effective HR employee.  This course is designed for new entrants to the HR market or to improve the skills of those currently employed in HR.  Topics include the important terms and concepts, how to develop an HR Plan and how to complete a variety of tasks required of HR employers.

2. Attendance: Taken at every class meeting, critical to everyone's enjoyment and edification of the skills, concepts and techniques addressed in the course.  If you have a problem with attending classor online sessions please discuss it with me.

3. Suggested Text:  Human Resource Management 10th Edition, R. Wayne Mondy Pearson Prentice Hall Publishers.  Available online

4.. Tests & Assignments: There are multiple in-class writing assignments throughout the course, as well as “take-home” assignments that must be completed and handed in.  4 Periodic Scheduled Tests will be administered. Make up tests are not available. See the weekly schedule for the dates of assignments and subjects covered. 50% reduction in points for late submissions.

5. Missed class: Missing three (3) consecutive classes or four (4) total classes may cause you to be dropped from the course.

6. Classroom conduct:  When you come to class, you are expected be on time and to stay for the entire class.  Please do not leave class after signing in.  This will be recorded as having missed the entire class. Respect Based Management Practices are expected.

6. Distance Learning:  You are expected to participate on a regular basis the entire class.  Please do not leave have long periods of inactivity after begining the class.  Long periods of inactivity can negatively effect your grade. Respect Based Management Practices are expected
